Almost everyone knows the theme song of Friends. I believe that, if you walk down any street holding a boombox that plays "I'll be there for you" on repeat, nine out of ten people will recognize the song. If you ask them who sings it though, things might get a bit messy. The Rembrandts will have to thank Friends for their biggest hit and probably for making loads of money!
If you think about it, the show started in a very confused period. Especially for American rock artists. Grunge had just committed suicide (yep, that's a Kurt Cobain reference) and on the other side, you had all these weird alternative rock bands that were on the radio all day long. Bands like the Spin Doctors or Hootie and the Blowfish. For some weird reason, I really like that wave of bands, I don't care that it was nothing dangerous or that, basically, it was a blank period before the boybands took over and destroyed the music industry forever. It's just relaxed, heartbroken rock ballads.
Anyway, I've read somewhere that the producers of Friends had asked REM and They Might be Giants to record a song for the opening titles but they both said no. That's where The Rembrandts came, with their sweet voices and melodies and rocked out with "I'll be There for you".
Even though "I'll be There for you" is perfect for the show, we decided to try out a few more songs that would also be cool as theme songs for our favorite sitcom of all time!

Barenaked Ladies - One Week
Well, I owe this one to Friends. It was from the first OST of the show that I discovered BNL. This song has a powerful intro and that's important for a theme song. The opening lyrics, "It's been one week since I looked at you", work perfectly for a weekly show that is based on a group of friends. Barenaked Ladies are the best when it comes to theme songs, don't forget the "Big Bang Theory" one, which is just perfect!
Nine Days - If I Am
Most known for their biggest hit, "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" .The truth is that, Nine Days are actually a pretty good pop/rock band. This song works for me, I believe it has a sitcom-y feeling in it but I think it would work better if, at some point, they wanted to give an early 00's view to the opening credits. It looks cool though!
Paul Westenberg - Stain yer Blood
Ok, I cheated, this one is also on one of the OST compilations with music from the show but it's a great tune from a legendary songwriter. Well, it doesn't get more '90's than that!
Fool's Garden - Yellow Lemon Tree
I'll tell you the truth, I'm not 100% sure about this one. I think it gives a strange feeling to the opening credits. Strange in a good way...
Supergrass - Alright
Well, I think that this one fits juuuust fine to the show and to the opening credits! Alright!
extras
ska friends
Well, from that perspective, it could easily be a show about some Rudeboys and girls that run a gang in New York city. Chandler has the coolest ska moves but Ross is the king of the pogo with his clothes and hat!
